LIAR The Label

Ethical, Eco + Sustainable swim ware from the shores of Byron Bay

When we were looking for collaborations to help us with our launch photo-shoot, we were so humbled to have found LIAR The Label. Founded by ethical advocate and designer Nisha Abey. LIAR is an Australian Eco label based in Byron Bay, redefining Swim and Active wear basics in a sustainable way with creative designs for anyone to wear. We are so in awe of what Nisha has accomplished so far with LIAR we had to find out more.

When asked what was the inspiration to start LIAR, Nisha explained, “The idea started in 2013 when myself and partner traveled to Sri Lanka, we were so inspired and grateful for the amazing work an independent turtle sanctuary where doing to help save and rehabilitate Sea Turtles that we decided we needed to contribute to the environment and world around us and promote sustainability in everything we were doing.”

LIAR has been continuously evolving since launching in 2014, and the underlying morals hold strong; to promote ethical fashion the best they can and produce styles that are cool and of the best quality whilst not damaging the environment or workers who help them in the process.

Three years in and growing every single day, we wanted to find out a bit about Nisha’s business journey so far. We learnt that similarly, they have shared highs and lows but always work hard for the wins, as business really is a journey. Nisha has been able to promote sustainable fashion on the radio and sharing their journey and real life experiences in university lectures, influencing tomorrows generation.

Nisha explains “The Fashion Industry is a tough cookie to implement change. I am still surprised how people still choose to buy fast fashion, especially with all the information that surrounds it daily, making the realisation that the workers are getting underpaid, the fabric is the cheapest that you are wearing and the quality isn't going to last longer than a few months and then end up in the landfill for decades. I started LIAR to influence how people shop ethically and to make a conscious decision by making cool styles that rival mainstream fashion.”

LIAR really gives you that choice in buying sustainable fashion. Manufactured in Australia which we love! There swim and active collections are made from the best recycled polyester. The bi-stretch fabric feels and fits amazing on (I have the Bryony Triangle Top and love it) and the best part is, the yarn is made from single use recycled plastic bottles and fishing nets, sustainable at its finest!

We asked Nisha what is the best advice she had received on her journey so far, she told us "to slow down"… and we think this is just great! Sometimes we become so consumed with our work we forget to take time out for ourselves and enjoy the moment.

As sustainability and slow fashion become more prevalent in our society and essential to our environment we wanted to know what are the future plans for LIAR and how can people become educated on slow limited fashion. Nisha shared with us “LIAR are moving into clothing and sourcing the best innovative ethical fabrics we can find and designing minimally. We are also concentrating more on educating people in the importance of changing how they shop and buying ethically through our online diary blog, lecturing and talks. Hopefully we will influence more people.
